Work Safety Regulations

Despite the efforts and precautions given to everybody about safety, we still get word of accidents at workplaces happening almost everyday. In this age of awareness on improved employees’ benefit, especially the requirement for safe working condition, it is sad to note that many events of this nature continue to exist.

Perhaps we are too fatalistic to assume that these tragedies are just effects of pure bad luck. Whereas it is true that luck sometimes inexplicably alter our lives, safety at work sites should not be entrusted to luck.

The construction lines of work tally the highest incidence of work-related accidents. This could be due to the fact that this line of jobs calls for ordinary workers whose education may be called as below the norm. As it is, most construction workers consider only at the job to be accomplished for the day and are confident that they can fend of for themselves with regard their own safety.

This being the case, a number of these workers who willfully ignore safety instructions, such as the putting on of sufficient protective clothing or hard hats for convenience, or wholly disregard safety measures for boastfulness, such as going without harness or without safety straps while working in high places.

It is in this situation emphatic safety education should be focused. It is not sufficient that campaign be confined only to the installation of sufficient safety signages.

For factories or businesses handling dangerous chemicals or highly flammable materials, extra care must be observed constantly. Appropriate hazardous chemical (HazChem) safety hazard sign or fire safety signs must be installed at proper locations as constant reminders. Where appropriate clothing and employment of specific protective gears are necessary, these must be unconditionally implemented and not compromised.

Disasters at work sites can be expensive for both workers and employers. Losses from these are to be taken as unacceptable to each party. A cooperative effort between employees and management could see to it that these workplace accidents can be stopped.

There would be few businesses that do not have hazardous materials around. Cleaning agents, petroleum products, adhesive materials, are just around the next corner in these businesses.

How this needs to be communicated depends on the impacts surrounding their use . The risks need to be determined to understand the best management approach.

In addressing risks, it’s best to re-engineer, control, and finally protect and inform to cut the significance of a hazard. A simple solution to managing any chemical hazard is to keep as low an inventory of these materials as possible and so simply, to avoid the problem.

It’s been demonstrated how a trained workforce is a safer workforce and, Hazard signs are important to an informed workforce.

As a guide here’s some examples of hazardous materials one could find within a work site – flammable liquids, flammable solids, spontaneously combustible, toxic, radioactive, oxidizing agents, poisons, corrosive and even, explosives; all required by law to be identified by a Hazchem sign of the appropriate designation.

The combined attributes of toxicity, flammability and reactivity for a material create a profile which determines its hazardous nature. Such materials are potentially injurious to human and environmental health – and therefore they must be controlled in their use.

These dangerous materials and fire simply do not mix. Following a procedure corresponding to the identified fire risks, are what one would expect. In the event of a fire, having the correct equipment identified with fire safety signs, and evacuation pathways marked, can make the difference to a major or minor loss and life and death.

Safe workplace are not an accident, they are the result of good and thorough planning – and this is even more relevant when there are substantial quantities of hazardous materials on site. Action to manage Hazchem risks are not just about legal compliance but are also driven by the community expectation of a safe workplace. And hazard signs are an essential component of establishing legal compliance.

Managing to keep incident risks low is simply good management, and that’s what the community expects these days.

Safety signs have been designed to communicate expected work practices, the locations of emergency equipment and hazardous materials.  They are the quite persuaders of what and how to do the diverse range of tasks needed to be done within a business; safely.

To perform this variety of directive tasks, a warning sign communicates expected behaviour and the positions of emergency equipment and hazardous materials.

So huge is the variety that functional groups have been logically established.  In ascending order of “need to obey” they commence with the informational, notice signs, stop signs, caution signs, danger signs, and arrive at obey signs where the expected action being communicated MUST be followed.

Looking at the Notice Signs they are informal in content, not covered by any legislation and reflect the needs of the company in directing people. Certainly the organization want’s you to observe these signs but failure to do so poses no risk to life and limb – amongst the texts will be Notice signs, Security Notices and Be Careful.

Whilst there is often no clearly delimited mark amongst the various sign texts, the strength of the content is communicated by the banner.

Next in order of “listen to me” are the Stop Signs. These are designed to delineated actions that are not permitted. These signs outline what is expected of employees. Failure to follow these signs advisory content is not at all likely to contribute to personal injury or accident.  This type of sign often is for behaviours expected as the result of legislation, and carries the force of law.

Examples of these signs are No Thoroughfare signs, No smoking signs, No exit signs No running and so the list goes on. And you can easily find custom versions of these to suit every situation.

Knowing the strength of the message content being conveyed is the responsibility of all in a work place. The more severe the message the greater the onus on the employer to deliver appropriate training and for the employee to rigidly follow the message of the sign – safe work just doesn’t happen.

For each functional group there is a different graphic format; color coded and in the main following international conventions with local adaptations. Every functional group is characterized by a banner unique in color and graphical style to that group.

Right under the nose of most businesses, there are hazardous goods. As an example, petrol, methylated spirits, detergents, oxidizing agents can be found even in a very small workplace.

How this needs to be communicated depends on the health and environmental impacts surrounding their use . Such risk is based on the characteristics of the chemical and the quantity kept on site.

In managing this risk it’s best to, avoid, control, protect and finally inform when it comes to ameliorating risks. An obvious strategy is to keep an absolute minimum of any hazardous materials on site at any one time.

It’s been shown how a well educated workforce is a safer workforce and off course, hazard signs are important to educating and informing all personnel.

Without being exhaustive here’s some examples of dangerous materials one could find within a work site – flammable liquids, flammable solids, spontaneously combustible, toxic, radioactive, oxidizing agents, poisons, corrosive and even, explosives; all needing to be identified by a Hazchem sign.

The attributes of toxicity, flammability and reactivity for a material create a material profile which determines how dangerous the material is. Hazardous materials are potentially injurious to people and the environment – they pose a substantial risk to both.

These hazardous materials and fire are a dangerous incompatible mix. So particular care must be taken to ensure a proactive stance to fire management, meaning, procedures for preventing, extinguishing and evacuating personnel in the event of a fire. In the event of a fire, having the correct equipment identified with fire safety signs, and evacuation pathways marked, are a legal requirement in many legal jurisdictions.

Safe work sites just don’t happen, they are the result of good and thorough planning – and this is even more so the case, when there are many hazardous materials on site. Steps to manage Hazchem risks are not just about compliance but are also driven by the community expectation of  having a safe job.  Having the necessary safety signs up are one component of respecting legislated requirements and having a safe workplace.

Managing to minimize such risks is simply good management, very much in line with today’s community expectations.

Let’s get it straight first up. Emarking on improving job safety starts with a site safety survey. With an audit in hand, it’s then a process of selectively actioning those things giving the best safety return for effort and money expended, all the way down the action list.

It’s from here on, you marshall the necessary hazard signs and personal safety gear. By themselves safety signs do not make a safety program; they are merely a support and reminder for all the things to be done after the safety audit. It’s like safety signs are the “third man” of safety, forever watching and reminding of the necessary action for safe work.

In the main, workplace hazards can be adequately sign posted by the standard selection of safety signs that are readily at hand. And surely this is the easiest and least expensive way to source your needed safety signs. However, standard designs don’t always meet your needs. With the latest technology, your requirements are easily met by these custom health and safety signs . Today, such custom signs are little more than an extra $7.00, and are fast to make.

This is what you need if amongst all those standard sign designs, you can’t find just what you need.

In general businesses these days want to be responsible corporate citizens, so safety signs are more than just legally complying – it’s about doing the right thing.  They are just a small part of caring for the community within which the organization operates.  Safety signs help inform on a variety of business, environmental impacts, amongst them, the potential for emissions, spills or incidents. Today, there are eco-friendly hazard signs made where it’s not only the signs message that’s protecting the environment but in making the signs, numerous green processes and materials are utilized.

So now you can know your not just doing the right thing with your safety sign insallations, but also because you can buy green eco-friendly workplace safety signage.

Safety signs within the workplace perform the role of safety messenger communicating correct and safe actions relevant for that locale.

Where ever a safety sign is placed it means there is some kind of hazard within that locality which represents a risk to the welfare of the organization. It is particular to that place and it is of import for those at that locality to comprehend the message and abide by it.

With the import of hazard signs for human and environmental health they are designed to have simple and clear in communicating their content. With the legal obligations on employers to guarantee a safe workplace it may be a good idea to provide training on how to behave for each different sign identified risk. It’s commonly recognized how much easier it is to understand pictures and symbols often more rapidly than the written word which is language dependent; hence, the simplicity and wide utilization of graphics, on warning signs.

More over, within many areas there are legislated requirements covering the necessity to display certain safety signs within workplaces. This is not a surprise given the high social costs attached to accidents at work, not to mention any pain and suffering.

Making visible, danger signs, size is key and there are some standards to guide the buyer and installer. It will not come as a great shock that a sign must me designed to be readable from the expected viewing distance. So the signs visibility needs to be such that the viewer has sufficient advanced warning to ensure compliance with the signs directive.

The signs message must be clearly interpreted and acted upon in an appropriate time frame; all of which is affected by the level of light.

When planning to install danger signs, the initial step is a safety survey of the work site, pursuit of hazard reduction strategies as is appropriate and finally to use safety signs for identifying those irreducible risks.  There are many classifications of signs and then categories of seriousness associated with the hazard. Be sure to identify the hazards and their associated risks appropriately, signing them as is appropriate. It will be time well invested.
