Tom Cruise has bought the rights to “The Monster of Florence”, the novel by the best thriller books writer Douglas Preston and by Mario Spezi the Florence journalist. The book has been at the top of the best sellers in the United States (eight weeks in the New York times best sellers list), after being voted top thriller novels of the year by Amazon. Douglas Preston, whose bestsellers have already inspired several successful Hollywood films, has described this film as the biggest film contract of his life.

Tom Cruise, owner of United Artists, is going to invest 50 million dollars into making the film, and will be the producer, and possibly also an actor in the film, in a partnership also involving Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Warner. The script is written by Christopher McQuarry, who also wrote the screenplay “very suspect”. Apparently the american actor fell in love with the idea, and was completely entranced by the best thriller books, which tells the story of the most famous italian serial killer, who was responsible for eight double murders committed between 1968 and 1985, killing young couples in remote spots in the countryside around Florence.

I’ve been following an interesting thread of conversation on a writing message board: a debate as to whether or not the practice of writing fiction novel is healthy for an aspiring writer.

By definition: “fiction novels” are stories involving characters from a television series or movie, written by fans and usually printed in underground magazines or on the Internet for other fans to enjoy. This concept is especially popular among fans of science fiction programs, and writers of all skill levels participate. For serious fiction writers, and even science fiction convention this year to write the best essay award. Stories may range from histories explaining gaps in a particular TV show’s canon (e.g. what has the cast of House been up to between seasons one and two?) to rather silly missives—I once found on the Internet a Star Trek story where all of the characters had been replaced by the cast of Desperate Housewives!

“Firewall” is top thriller following a very common guide rail that’s been in place in cinema for decades. From his past work, Harrison Ford loves to make these films; through their own from a traditional blue-collar hero, and returning back to a little old-fashioned spirit of cinema. This is impossible, and refused to Ford when he was the focus of the performance of his wounds a strict “firewall” when the script and direction do not know where to go.

The first hour of “Firewall” is devoted to traditional best thriller trappings, and the material hums nicely when the thrills are kept reasonable and the techobabble is sent to a corner for a time out.
