So you are starting out in Internet Marketing and are baffled by the jargon.  You don’t know your SMTP from your FTP or where to put your POP3.

Internet Marketing has all sorts of jargon associated with it that confuses many new and veteran marketers.  So how do you decipher this jargon and translate it into a language you can understand?

This article will help you to understand some of the common terms in Internet Marketing.  And now some Jargon beginning with A …

Ad Tracking

Ad tracking is simply the process of tracking the response from your ads. Why?  Because you need to know where your traffic is coming from and how it is converting.  This is particularly important if you are paying for adverts – you need to know which adverts are bringing you in business so you can keep them running whilst stopping the adverts that are not bringing in business.

How do you track your adverts?  Well you could try and do it manually, but it is likely to be so time consuming that it will be a complete nightmare.  The alternative is to use some ad tracking software.  There are lots of scripts and utilities available for this.   Using software will make it easier for you to determine which adverts are bringing you traffic and where to spend your advertising budget for maximum effect.

Affiliates

Affiliates is a big thing in Internet Marketing and it can be a bit difficult to understand it at first.  There are really two terms here – Affiliate Manager and Affiliate.  An Affiliate Manager is someone who runs an Affiliate Program and recruits Affiliates … you following me?

Everyone knows what McDonalds is – a restaurant, no ethical or nutritional debates here – it’s basically a big franchise.  Mr McDonald sits in his ivory tower counting his money whilst Joe Bloggs runs a McDonalds restaurant.

Mr McDonald is the Affiliate Manager – he owns the franchise and sells rights to other people (the Affiliates) to run a restaurant.  In order for them to do this he gives them resources such as training, knowledge, equipment and so on.

As an affiliate, you can expect your affiliate manager to give you useful tools you can use to sell his product.

Autoresponder

An autoresponder does exactly what it says on the tin – it responds automatically!  To what you may ask – to email!  This is how those crafty Internet Marketers fill up your inbox whilst sitting on the beach drinking cocktails!

An autoresponder allows you to set up a series of messages to be delivered to a recipient over a time period determined by you.  It is a fantastic tool and one you should definitely invest in – remember, you are in Internet Marketing to make money and to have more time – an autoresponder will save you lots of time.

I hope you are not sitting there stressing about how you can make your small business hum a little.  If you own a small home based business then now is the time for you to get creative on your marketing and start a marketing campaign if you have not already.

Have You Found That Business Is A Little Tough Out There?  Of Course You Have!So many people do!

The point is, what are you doing about increasing sales?

If you are finding it a little quiet you will know that there has never been a better time for you to improve your skills with new techniques or to expand your present skills with totally new knowledge.  You can access so much information on the internet that you just cannot get away with saying that, “you cannot find any relevant information”.

I am sure that you can find some time during your day that you could put aside to learn some new skills.  When you have a work at home business, it is tempting to switch off and not concentrate on your business marketing, but no business can survive that way.

NOW is the opportune time to find out what your competitors are offering or what they are NOT offering.   It is a time to find out what your customers either cannot get or cannot get enough of, and then you can set yourself up to CORNER THE MARKET.

Don’t ‘dillydally’, get stuck into it and make it happen!Take hold of the opportunity and give it the best shot you have. 

But , HEY DON’T STOP THERE!  

Get out and start looking for the next opportunity.  It may mean you have to stock something that you had not previously stocked, and if that is the case then do so.  But buy carefully and in small lots, you can always buy more. 

Don’t make the mistake I sometimes did of getting all caught up in the success of your promotion and ordering too much.  The initial flush can sometimes be deceiving. Not that the product won’t keep on selling, but you can get the wrong impression about how much you will sell on a regular basis.

To start with, find out what your customers want and then supply it.  Ask questions or do a written survey if necessary, but whatever you do, now is the time find out exactly what your customers are looking for.

There are many places to do free marketing out there, or at the very least, reasonable marketing, so search them out and take advantage of them.  On the internet you can use U-tube, Facebook, Twitter, articles directories or create a blog, to name a few.  These techniques are especially good for home based businesses.

Look at ways to create customer loyalty.  It could be by discount card or email contact, but make sure you are keeping in regular contact with your clients.You will find it so much easier to get a previous client to buy than it is to get a new client to spend.Put at least one hour each day into marketing your home based business.  On top of that, do a little research on the internet and find out what other work at home business owners are doing to promote their businesses.

I am writing this press release to all the Internet Marketing rookies like me! Well, now that I think about it, you are probably not like me. I am a 57-year-old Internet Marketing grandmother who lives in a small house in upstate New York.

Anyway, just this past December I was financially desperate. I won’t tell you my whole sob story, but the bottom line is that I was out of money and still had $1000s of bills to pay each month!

I was a branch manager at our local Citibank and when the mortgage crisis hit I was one of the many innocent victims of the corporate greed that created much of this mess. I lost my job and in just a few short months all of my savings were gone as well. Finding a job in the industry was a lesson in futility so I was forced to re-invent myself.

By chance I started reading Your Portable Empire by Pat O’Bryan and that’s when I decided to try Internet Marketing.

Shortly thereafter I started looking around on the internet. I bought a couple of ebooks that taught me what to do. I literally followed the instructions, WORD FOR WORD. One book was about how to write articles and ebooks and the other was about generating traffic to your website.

Here is my encouragement to you! I had never done this before! I was a writer and I had a laptop, but that’s about as much as I could bring to the table. On top of it, I had virtually no money! So I had to make things happen on a shoe-string budget!

I ended up spending less than $100, wrote and started selling two eBooks of my own . . . and within just over 4 weeks, I made more than $10,000 with Internet Marketing. What I’ve since learned is that this is even more amazing since the two eBooks I wrote and I sold were both priced at only $10 each.

Here is what I did:

1. I wrote about a subject that interested me.

2. I got an inexpensive web hosting package and made my own blog(very easy).
3. I built a free WordPress blog at wordpress.com
4. I created a Squidoo page and pointed it to both my blogs.
5. I wrote about the subject and created about 10 posts. I kept adding more and more content throughout the process.
6. I wrote my first eBook and priced it at only $8.
7. I wrote a few articles and submitted them to free article directories.
8. I wrote another eBook and priced it at $10.
9. I continued to post to my blogs in addition to answering emails.
10. Within in a few weeks, I was on page 1 of Google(not nearly as hard as I thought)
11. I opened an account with PayPal to handle the transactions (no cost)
12. I stayed focused even though some days weren’t as encouraging as others.

So now that I’ve had this first experience, I am totally convinced that focused work and determination can create an income through Internet Marketing. Truly, I just wrote about a subject close to my heart. I sold to common men and women who were looking for information – not internet information, but information to help them in their lives.

I was honest, respectful and gave excellent customer service to everyone who contacted me. I learned how to put together an email list and now I am working on ways to sell products to my more than 1400 buyers!

There is still a lot I don’t know. I continue to experiment and learn everyday. I’m excited about the future and encourage each of you reading this post to stay focused, spend your money wisely on good quality tools, and BEGIN!

If a grandmother living in the middle of upstate New York and can make $10,000 in just over 4 weeks on her first Internet Marketing offer, then anybody can who is willing to follow the same or similar steps for success! I have no doubt!
