How To Fit In At Your New Company

Aside from the actual work that you do, you will be surrounded by a variety of personalities, prejudices, and people who have their own agendas. A version of this unique situation will present itself at every company you work, and you must learn how to fit in. You will have to learn each company’s culture also.
Differences Need to be Accepted
Let’s say, your boss would yell if someone didn’t pick up the phone at your first job. You decide to answer a call at your co worker’s desk at your second job. The person who’s phone you answered, decides to yell at you for answering their phone. Sometimes you just can’t win, because the rules at one workplace don’t always apply equally across the board.
Your first job made it clear that no call should ever go to voice mail. Your second company had a different view. Every company you work will take time to learn the details. The way to accomplish this is to ask a lot of questions and approach each new job with an opened mind. There may be a friendly person who will take you under their wing and show you around.
A Peek Into Company Culture
Company culture encompasses your interactions with customers, co-workers and even the way you dress. If you have been out of the job place for awhile, it may be difficult to know what to wear to work. If the company is large enough, the company handbook will give you clues such as no jeans or sneakers. Observing your coworkers is one of the best ways to figure out what to wear. Also take note of their mannerisms. If it appears everyone uses their cell phones, you should probably be able to use yours during the day. But if this is not common, a good practice is to turn it off, or at least switch to vibrate when you enter the building, and keep it tucked in your briefcase or bag.
There are so many things to learn when starting a new job, it amazing that anyone can prove to be successful. But if you go in with an open mind, ask a lot of questions, and try to play by the culture rules, you will find it much easier to fit in with the new crowd. Keeping an open mind means not making assumptions about the company or the people. Allow yourself time to adjust and fit in. It is better to float in softly like a butterfly, than to knock down walls like a bulldozer.
